As the snow starts to melt and the temps begin to rise, the hermits of a frigid South Dakotan winter crawl off their couches and venture out to bask in the much-needed sun rays of spring. The members of the community are able to spend more time doing the things they love – the things that make Spearfish their home. From catching trout in Spearfish Creek and biking Lookout Peak to hiking Devil’s Bathtub and climbing the limestone walls at Blue Sky, the citizens of Spearfish enjoy every breath of pine-scented air they can take in. What better way to bring the people of Spearfish and the climbing community together than some good ol’ friendly competition?

On the 28th of April, 2018, the BHSU CRUX Climbing Club will be hosting the first annual Spearfish Scramble Climbing Competition. At 6 AM, climbing teams of two will start hiking the trails to Blue Sky, the Mohican, and Big Picture Gully to kick off the 12-hour escapade. There will be several categories that the teams can compete for such as, King Scrambler, Road Warrior, Silver Panther, and Hardest Route. King Scrambler will be awarded to the team with the most points and Road Warrior to those who climb the most routes, while Silver Panther will be the senior category. Registration will be held at 5 AM on the morning of April 28th and will cost $30 per team of two. Will you climb your way to the King Scrambler’s throne or will you whip off the crux and get scrambled?
