The Spearfish Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch opened for the fall season on Sept. 8. The venue featured a variety of fall-themed activities including a corn maze, a children’s corn maze, a hay ride, a giant hay slide, the hay jump, rubber duck water races, a playground, a zipline and a pumpkin patch.
The Spearfish Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch offered a festive environment to get lost in the autumn spirit.
Samantha Tohm, a freshman exercise science major, said, “My favorite part of the corn maze and pumpkin patch was trying to find all eight stamps located throughout the maze.”
In addition to all of the day-time activities, Spearfish Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch turns into a field of terror when dusk rolls around. The last two weekends prior to Halloween, and on the evening of, the corn maze becomes haunted with frightening creatures.
BHSU students, as well as Spearfish High School students, were offered the opportunity to dress in character and scare the maze attendees. This year volunteers were scattered throughout the maze dressed as lost ghosts, ghouls, werewolves and other spooky surprises.
After Halloween, Spearfish Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch is known as Spearfish Valley Produce. Nikole Krautschun and her husband, Bart Krautschun, started their business in 2003 as a roadside vegetable stand. From there, they expanded their business. Spearfish Valley Produce now prepares crops for daily deliveries to many local grocery stores, some of which include Lynn’s Dakotamart in Sturgis, Lueders in Spearfish and Belle Fourche and many more local venues and farmers markets.
