A college campus is a place for learning, collaboration, and the occasional need to use the restroom, some more than others. Some look forward to when that need arises, taking the chance for a break from class, a time to relax and reflect, ruined by the abhorrent stench of some of the loos. I took it upon myself to answer the question of which is the most pleasant at BHSU, excluding the dorms, which would require a whole separate dissection. The criteria are not the same for this go around. Due to the absolute impossibility and refusal to taste anything in a bathroom, a sniff alone will do this time.

JONAS ACADEMIC (1st FLOOR)

The Jonas Academic bathrooms are overall subpar, nowhere near an enjoyable place to get the job done. The outdated feel and overall claustrophobic size are uncomfortable, along with other students and faculty always occupying the stalls. However, there are better and worse from the bunch of bad options. Jonas’ first floor is a contender for the worst bathroom on campus, as soon as I walked in the smell of what I could only describe as Cheeto dust and sweat greeted my nostrils. After closing the door I spent a little time trying to figure out how a bathroom could smell like that. There were also paper towels overflowing and a slight stickiness to the floor. All those factors including both stalls being used, created one of the most uncomfortable experiences.

JONAS ACADEMIC (2nd FLOOR) 

The loo on floor two was my second favorite location in Jonas. The air felt lighter compared to the hot and dense rooms of one and three, creating an overall pleasant experience. There was no trash overflowing or sticky floors, and the urinals appeared spotless. It just occurred to me that I should probably specify that this is a review of the men’s bathrooms only. It would be frowned upon to walk into the ladies’ room, take a sniff, and leave.

JONAS ACADEMIC (3rd FLOOR) 

The third floor of Jonas is an area I have not spent much time during my academic career and the bathroom on that floor is nothing special. It was clean overall with minimal trash on the floor besides a random towel or two on the ground. To my surprise each of the Jonas bathrooms had a distinctly different smell, this one could only be described as dusty and hot compared to the others.

JONAS ACADEMIC (BASEMENT) 

Of all the restrooms on campus, the basement of Jonas is the one I have the most experience with. It’s much larger than the others in the building but somehow has fewer urinals and the same amount of stalls. The floors are noticeably dirtier, and footprints where people stand at the urinal are caked with dirt. The sniff was stale but had a slight cleanliness to it which was pleasing, it also is the least busiest on campus which raises the rating in my opinion.

STUDENT UNION 

When walking across the sky bridge on a mission to sniff the potties, the student union loo provided the most fear. Located in one of the busiest locations on campus and being right next to the cafeteria were the two factors that made me expect a horrific stench. The fear dissipated immediately after opening the door, this was easily the best-smelling restroom so far. Fresh lemon greeted my nose along with being drastically bigger and cleaner than all of the Jonas locations. This bathroom is definitely busy throughout the day but it’s worth it for an enjoyable experience.

LIBRARY (MAIN FLOOR) 

I had high expectations for the library bathrooms considering it just got brand new renovations completed in 2022, but these expectations diminished quickly. I must have shown up at the wrong time or something because it smelled abhorrent there. Being in one of the busier buildings on campus I wasn’t expecting the best but nowhere near that bad. The restroom itself is spacious and looks more modern but that doesn’t combat the smell in any way.

STUDENT UNION (2nd FLOOR)

I became nervous to crack the doors of the second floor. Expecting the worst possible stench I held my breath for a moment before breathing in, to my surprise it was drastically different from the first floor. Besides being stuffy and hot it smelled the exact same as the library itself right outside the door.
