Hidden up on the college hill near the roundabout on W. Jackson Blvd, Dough Trader Pizza is tucked away among several other restaurants. Though the building is a remodeled Tastee Freeze from the 1960s, the Dough Trader has made it into a comfortable environment with a welcoming atmosphere. Inside, rustic decor and cozy seating add to the ambience, while subtle vintage touches let the building’s roots shine through.
They offer indoor seating both at the bar and individual tables, providing a relaxed setting for guests. As patrons walk to their seats, they can catch a glimpse into the brighty lit kitchen, and they are greeted by the mouthwatering aromas of simmering tomatoes, bubbling cheese and sourdough crust rising in the stone oven.
The Dough Trader also offers patio seating, where customers can enjoy the light breeze that often drifts off the hill, along with views of the town and the surrounding Black Hills scenery. The patio is peaceful, as it’s off of the main road, and makes the Dough Trader a great spot to enjoy a meal during nice weather.
The Dough Trader’s menu features various stone oven-baked pizzas, each crafted with attention to detail and house-made sourdough crust that is chewy, crisp and very light. Notable options include the “Scarborough Fair” pizza, which combines a hardy blend of marinara, sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, onion, bell pepper, cheese and their signature seasoning for those who love all things savory.
Their spin on a classic Margherita pizza is named the “Sister Marguerite” and features a balance of marinara, sliced Roma tomato, garlic, basil and cheese. The simplicity highlights the freshness of the produce. Another redone classic is the “King Leonidas” which includes marinara, pepperoni, sausage and cheese for those who value both simplicity and plenty of protein.
For anyone who doesn’t feel like pizza, the Dough Trader also offers a limited menu of salads. The Bacon Beets Goat salad is a standout, offering a refreshing and flavorful option. This salad has onion, tomato, roasted beets, goat cheese and candied bacon with “sweet’n’savory” dressing made using local honey, all tossed on a bed of mixed spring greens. The balance of earthy, sweet and tangy flavors makes it a satisfying dish on its own or a perfect palate cleanser when eaten alongside one of their pizzas. The restaurant also has a rotating selection of beer and wine to complement the meals.
The Dough Trader staff is attentive and welcoming, making sure that diners have a pleasant experience from start to finish. Their commitment to quality service extends past the dining room as well– they are incredibly kind and helpful over the phone. There is no difference in the quality of their food, whether it is eaten in the restaurant or taken home for a private meal
The one downside of the Dough Trader is that the location is cash-only. In this day and age, most people (including myself) often rely heavily on card payments or trusty tap-to-pay, so this can occasionally be an inconvenience. The owners, however, have clearly seen that this is a potential issue and have gone through hoops to make this easier for patrons by having an ATM on-site.
While it may require an extra step, the availability of the ATM ensures that customers aren’t left scrambling for cash if they arrive unaware of this rule.
It is also important to note that the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so planning ahead would prevent any scheduling conflicts.
