After two and a half years of writing food reviews for the BHSU Jacket Journal, I have somehow never gotten around to reviewing the Spearfish staple that is Killian’s. Located at 539 W Jackson Blvd., this bar and grill strikes a unique balance between a classic college-scene pub and a welcoming spot for families to settle in and enjoy a meal.
The bar has a rotating tap list filled with local craft beers, along with an extensive list of signature cocktails if lagers and ales aren’t your thing. Killian’s also hosts an eye-popping wine list that, while impressive and surely delightful, does not fit a college-sized budget. Order at your wallet’s risk.
Before you indulge too much in their quality drink selection, a warning: the parking lot is tight. If you navigate town in a larger truck, it may be safer to opt for parking across the street and walking over, so as not to get insurance companies and scratched paint involved in your relaxing night out.
If you do end up drinking more than planned, worry not, the Killian’s kitchen has you covered with sandwiches, burgers and pub plates. My personal favorites include the Corned Beef ‘n’ Cabbage plate served with truffle mashed potatoes, the Brisket Dip with Swiss and au jus and the Crab Stuffed Mushrooms.
The Corned Beef ‘N’ Cabbage is served hot, bathed in a butter au jus sauce. The dish, to my delight, has made zero contact with cloves – a rare thing to find for this dish when you’re not cooking it yourself at home. The truffle mashed potatoes are fluffy and creamy with no lumps to speak of.
The Brisket Dip features tender meat with just enough substance to give each bite a pleasant chew. The dish is served with a side of house fries or kettle chips – I always opt for the fries, but both are crispy, golden, beer-battered and always great for dipping in Killian’s ranch.
One thing worth noting: the french fries are not gluten-free by default, but may be requested as such. This is a common theme throughout the menu, as Killian’s hosts a large assortment of gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options.
The crab-stuffed mushrooms are served with a thick layer of cheddar cheese melted on top, seasoned with a lemon pepper blend and garnished with fresh chives.
Not only is the food great, but the staff is attentive and very kind. They’re quick without making customers feel rushed, and even on busy nights, they manage their sections well and make everyone feel attended to. Killian’s staff’s attitude and work ethic is more than half of the reason I always come back.
Killian’s remains a Spearfish staple for a reason. Great food, unique drinks and consistently warm service make every visit feel welcoming. It’s the kind of place where you can meet up with friends, share a meal with family or simply stop in solo for good grub and a cold beer.
