Psychology club donates to women’s shelter
Black Hills State University’s Psychology Club is an organization dedicated to promote and
build a greater understanding of the psychology field throughout the school’s student
body. This organization does not only encourage BHSU students learn more about psychology, but also encourages students to engage in activities that will help them, as well as other people.
This past November 13, the psychology club hosted an event called “Take Back The Night,” also known as TBTN.
“Take back the night is a nationwide event that promotes the awareness of domestic abuse and sexual assault,” Taarna Murray said, this semester’s President of the Psychology Club.
For this event five guest speakers were invited to talk about domestic abuse and sexual assault. The guest speakers explained to the audience what to do if you or one of your friends is going through this and how to give the students some tips of how to cope with these situations. According to Murray, 50 people, between students and community members attended the event.
On top of helping students become aware of domestic violence and sexual abuse, the Psychology Club decided to help the Artemis House women’s shelter with donations. The Artemis House is an emergency shelter for families and or individuals that are struggling with domestic and sexual violence. This shelter provides temporary housing to women and immediate basic needs assistance.
“We collected donations of clothing and toiletries for the women’s shelter, the Artemis House because they helped us with TBTN in previous years and this year they also donated a large quantity of information booklets, bracelets and stickers,” Murray said.
To make this happen, the Psychology Club set out a box by their information booth and asked students to donate clothes, coats, soaps, lotions and more. Although the Psychology Club already made their donation, people are still encouraged to donate clothes and toiletries for this worthy cause.
“People are encouraged to drop off donations to the Artemis House throughout the year as supplies do run out,” Murray said.
If you would like to donate clothes or any items to this charity, or know of someone who is suffering from domestic abuse, you can call the Artemis House at 703-435-4940 . For more information on this or more events hosted by the Psychology Club, contact Taarna Murray at [email protected].
