As the track season has been winding down the season has been successful.
With three meets left and then the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference final competition in May the Black Hills State University track and field team has accomplished much.
Abby Albers broke the school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.95. Riley Meissner also broke a school record with 4,300 points in the multi-track event in January for the holiday open. Paige Follett is one track and field athlete that beat the school record of indoor high jump and has qualified for indoor nationals.
“I was thrilled finding I broke it,” said Follett in February about her record.
As a senior Paige Follett has seen the team change a lot over four years.
“We got a new coach in 2011. Just this past year we got a new coach that has been a great help,” Follette said.
For sophomore Kendall Murie who has been running most of his life said it has been a great experience being on the team.
“I’ve been received pretty good, they’re pretty friendly people, I like them,” said Murie.
Murie has enjoyed growing as a runner and hopes to see himself in a better position next year when he gets to officially run for BHSU track and field.
Murie is a long-distance runner and takes part of the 5 kilometers, 3 kilometers and 1,500 meter races. As a red-shirt he can’t compete but can run unattached.
In the transition from NAIA to NCAA division II track members couldn’t participate in nationals. In the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this year the men’s outdoor track team is expected to finish fifth and the women’s team was polled at being ninth, according to the official RMAC website.
Paige Follett said the team has always been a pretty young team as far as athletes. This year was no different with about three-fourths of the team being freshmen and sophomores.
“They can be tough and put us through some intense practices. They know what potential the team has and they just want us to achieve what they know we can,” said Follet.
On May 10 there will be a track meet at South Dakota School of Mines and on May 17 there will be a meet in Dickinson, N.D. where the team will be able to compete for national qualifiers.
